What I wish I'd known a year ago.......

During the festive holidays I took time to look at business - to see what we did last year and what we would like/need to do for this year.

Reading an article today, brought me back to this, confirming I should have actioned my "train of thought" earlier. I had plans a while ago to focus on additional new directions to help us grow (......still work-in-progress.....).

However, it also made me look hard at what went right and what went wrong last year. So,I wish I had;

- spent more time with my Business Mentor/Accountant, talking thru these ideas, putting plans in place rather than waiting until January

- looked around earlier for another member of staff to join the great guys that work with me already

- been a bit more agressive in chasing/closing down some commercial work oppurtunities

- invested in more in back office software (such as LiberRate quoting system) sooner

How about you - what do you wish you had known a year ago?

  • I wish i had started a dedicated marketing scheme before now. Last year and the years before that i relied on word of mouth and luck.

    But now i am starting a regular marketing scheme to work throughout the year.

  • i wish i had know how bad / hard it is going to be this year ..................

    good luck on  taking another member of staff.       if i do well in february i think that it will be a good yr .  if not i dont think it will ..    we will see .

  • What I wish I'd known a year ago.......Last years data.

    Finally got enough years under my belt to see trends, changes, look at year on year. And things no longer scare me...it's a great feeling, taken lots of work, loads of bad choices and loads of good ones but I've now got a reasonably clear idea of the market...Onwards and upwards.

    Only one thing, albeit a massive one thing, never, never take verbal instructions from a contracts manager as gospel !!! I should have been much tighter on getting the written instructions within 24 hours, but was too keen to impress on a multi thousand pound landscape construction project and promptly put me on my knees when they shafted me on payment, nearly bankrupted me :-(. Recovered well in the last half of the year thanks to winning quite a few new high value grounds maintenance contracts, but has left a very bad taste in my mouth with trusting contracts managers of a company I have subbied to for over 4 years, not good !!
    In Charles Darwin I trust, everybody else gives purchase orders or no deal :-)
