What could this be?

This is a lawn that I look after, the last feed was a 4 month fertiliser treatment back in April/May and a treatment with a weed killer at the end of June. (Re-Act)

I had turned up this evening to do an Autumn feed...

Anyone have any ideas?

  • Looks like it could possibly be a very very blunt lawnmower blade tearing the tops of the grass?

Then the sun dries off the stringy battered ends and it looks like that..... hmmm thats the only thing I can think of.

  • Would say the same as above.

Looks like the blade of the mower has 'dropped' and cut down into the stalk of the grass.

Is it a creeping bent grass lawn ?

  • Red thread is caused by nitrogen deficiency and is manifest by grass tips in patchy areas turning a tinge of red at the tips.
The above photos do not look to be red thread. More likely a blade issue.
  • What mower were you using, Robbie, or does the customer cut it and if so with what? If you only did the treatments in April/May and June, when did the symptoms appear?

Compaction on regular tracks of mower wheels?

  • looks like the grass has been long and is full of moss then cut down to the normal height  with a blunt blade and the last couple of week of dry sunny weather has scorched the moss

  • We don't do 'week of sunny weather' in NI. 3 days max, every 10 years or so!

But that does sound like a runner.

Thanks for your help guys, I think it has been a combination of things.

It's always cut in the same direction. (In the wet), the grass is all matted & the lawn mower blade is blunt.

I have told the customer, that they will require the gardener to cut in a different direction every cut and buy a new blade for his lawn mower or at least get it sharpened!

I will be aerating, scarfing & overseeding in the next week or so.
