I have several customers who have got ponds in thier gardens. Both of them cannot find a reputable Pond Man to maintain the ponds and they have asked me if I would be interested in maintaining their ponds. What is the best pond vac/Hoover on the market and how often and when should I be cleaning out the ponds (without disturbing the wildlife). Obviously the leaves can be scooped out in the autumn.Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks

When I worked in an aquatic shop we used to hire out an Oase pond vac to our customers. It was quite a sturdy and reliable piece of equipment. Not the cheapest you can buy but as with everything, you get what you pay for.

If the pond is established you will inevitably end up disturbing some wildlife. Most pond work is done in the winter. If there are fish in the pond they should easily avoid the vacuum but be gentle just in case. Try not to remove more than half the water when cleaning a pond, and if you are filling it back up with tap water you should first add some dechlorinator (e.g. Tetrapond Aquasafe) to stop the chlorine killing the good bacteria that maintain a healthy pond.

Any plants removed should be left on the side of the pond for a day or two to allow creepy crawlies to get back in to the pond before being taken away.
Keep all that nice sludge that comes out of the vac, its full of nutrients for the borders!

    • I bought an Oase one for my own ponds, think it is the pondovac 3, it lifted all sorts of rubbish and left these stones clean. They were completely covered with silt before i started. It does sometimes jam up with the odd stone and you have to remove the lift hose at the unit or take the lit off completely to clear it.I usually do mine each January/February.

      • Thanks Philip; pond looks very clean.
