Well I never!

At one of our weekly maintenace clients we moved a small standard tree recently that wasn't doing particularly well and was too close to other plants.  It came up very easily and when we moved it there was a hole underneath.

I shone my phone torch into the hole but couldn't see anything apart from darkness.

So, we put a spade into the hole but couldn't feel the bottom

So we pushed our rake handle down the hole..... but couldn't feel the bottom!

So, I put my phone in the hole and took a photo and this is what we saw...

An approx 4 foot wide and 11 foot deep well!

Our first house was terraced with a shared water main. I took the opportunity of digging in a new supply whilst the main was being relined in the street, then I started digging to disconnect the original supply pipe on the boundary between us and one of the neighbours.

The elderly neighbour came out to issue the warning that I should be careful digging where I was, so I got out of the hole and hammered the bottom of it with a five foot crowbar.

After three strikes it looked just like your first picture.

I capped it with concrete with four inch soil pipe and access cover set into it with the intention of installing a working hand pump, but I never did get around to it. The house has changed hands a few times and I doubt the current owners even know it is there.

    Andy.
