Our first house was terraced with a shared water main. I took the opportunity of digging in a new supply whilst the main was being relined in the street, then I started digging to disconnect the original supply pipe on the boundary between us and one of the neighbours.
The elderly neighbour came out to issue the warning that I should be careful digging where I was, so I got out of the hole and hammered the bottom of it with a five foot crowbar.
After three strikes it looked just like your first picture.
I capped it with concrete with four inch soil pipe and access cover set into it with the intention of installing a working hand pump, but I never did get around to it. The house has changed hands a few times and I doubt the current owners even know it is there.
