Weeding/planting knife

Looking for carbon steel weeding/planting knife not made from stainless steel. All the major makes seem to be stainless which from reviews all  bend easily unless are used in television soil! Only one that have found is by Darlac which has awful reviews. Why do these makers insist on using stainless for the majority of tools which are as strong as plasticine, carbon steel is so much stronger. Suspect that Joe Public are attracted to shiny like magpies with no thought as to the longevity or strength. Anyway  anyone know of a carbon steel weeding planting knife?

  • Hi Faithfull Countryman FAICOUHPK is a carbon steel one, about 8 quid on amazon, if that's the type of tool you are after. Ash wood handle with green coating on blade

    • Thanks, just looked but thats a patio slab knife. What I'm after is similar to a very narrow trowel

      • ohhh like a widger? Gardena do a very narrow weeding trowel which has a grey painted coating so probably not actually stainless steel

        • Thank you! They seem to do 2 types , one has a blue painted blade the other described as "eco line" with a shiny blade . Can"t see any specs for blade just says metal, have you anymore info?

I have a blue gardenia one . It's coated blue the coating comes off during use and if not wiped then it attracts surface rust but it's a strong blade unlike the darlac one which bends ,I have both I like the darlac brand but like all brands they carry lines which should be revised .

I don't use mine much but I have used it for prying up rockery stones and the blade is still straight .

The blade is moulded into a black tough plastic handle and has a very comfortable feeling and the blade shaft is very well constructed it's not just a flat bar .

It's an additional tool for me have used it for getting tap roots out and great on rockeries.

My dedicated weeding /planting tool is now discontinued so irrelevant but it was purchased years ago from homebase before it closed down , it's stainless steel but never rusted or worn away or even come loose and done years of work .

          • probably avoid the shiny blade one... I've noticed that the word "stainless" in many respects is sometimes a mis-translation and refers to carbon steel with some kind of coating or zinc plated or galvanised

            • Have ordered one with painted blade. Apparently Gardena say they have a 25 year guarantee which will take me up to 91 yrs old, do you think I should order a spare ?🤣

              • I would say at 91 you would be more likely to forget where you left it, than break it !

Metal detecting knives are robust in my experience  Peter which is what I would buy if my trusty weeding / planting knife ever went missing.

  • The Niwaki hori-hori is carbon steel. We've been using them for a good few years now and wouldn't be without them.
