Website advice

Hi All,

I'm will be going full time into my garden maintenance business this year after starting up part-time last year. I'm hoping my website will help me attract new business. If anyone has a couple of minutes spare to have a look over it for me and can offer any constructive criticism that would be really helpful. Please bear in mind though i'm no expert and a total beginner at building websites. I've tried to do my own SEO best i can and im thinking of trying adwords this year also.

Thanks,
Matt.

    Hi Matt,

as a first website I think it looks very good. Some comments:

    1. Make sure you have a google plus page - its free.

    2. Unify colours and fonts - have a limited selection and use those consistently across all pages.

    3. What tool did you use to create - does it have background themes you can select from.

    4. Likewise does it have blog and review widgets you can add - blogs are a simple way of refreshing the website.

    5. Is that your home number on the front - you may want to change to a virtual landline.

    6. Add a gallery area.

    7. You have PA1/PA6, so can also spray pesticides and drive sprays.

    8. Why not feed the lawns as well?

    Good luck.

    Andy

    • Whether you decide to use a virtual landline or not, just use one contact number. People don't like having to think about which number they should use.

Personally, my business has only ever had a mobile for contact and we're turning work away so I don't see a problem with not having a landline number.

Make sure all your 'i' s are upper case 'I' s

  • Thanks guys for taking the time.

Andrew - thanks for all your points. I do have a google plus page that links to my website, so i need to put in a link from my site to help the SEO. I've not heard of a 'virtual landline' before. I will do some research. Although i have my pa1/6 i've not had much experience with lawn treatments so therefore I dont advertise it. Also none of my customers so far require it. Maybe something for the future. My site is created with something called RVsitebuilder. Its included with my web hosting.

Mark - thanks for the advice re phone numbers. I've included a landline as i read somewhere that potential customers tend to prefer to see landline number. Maybe this isn't the case. I see what you mean about using one number though. Much more straight forward. I will look up what a virtual landline is.

Geoffrey - thanks for the spot with the 'i' ill sort that. :-)

    Matt.

As other have said virtual landline if you don't want home number out there.
I've just bought one this week as my website is nearing completion and wanted to get my home number off business cards etc. £2 a month and 5ppm to divert to mobile from invoco.
The main hedge cutting picture I would take again but only because the ear defender is not in use!!
Good first effort better than mine would be I'm having mine done for me as I'm rubbish at things like this!!
    • Hi Richard. Yes i've been looking into a virtual landline after the others had suggested it. Seems interesting but I don't think the cost viable for me right now but something to keep in mind for sure.

I know what you mean about the picture. It was just a quick snap I asked a work colleague to take last year. I said this may end up on my business website - now it has!.

      Thanks for your feedback.

      Matt.

  • The key to a good site with good traffic is to ensure you have the right keywords that describe your business. You need to make sure they are mentioned throughout your pages (but not spammed!).

Then sign up to forums that relate to your website and make sure your weblink is in your signature. Then be helpful to others and each time you are you gain a backlink that helps both the forum and your website.

Facebook also works this was by providing backlinks as does LinkedIn.

    Hope this helps
    Chris
