Desperately need to update and improve our website, and wondered what people on here have done about their websites? Have you paid a professional to do it or have you done it yourself? If you have paid, how much did it cost and were you pleased with the results? We have previously built ours ourselves, using the template provided by the web hoster. We've been quoted £795 for a professional to do a basic package from a professional. They seem very clued up and focused, but its a lot of money - worth it?

    Definitely worth it.

I can recommend Jason at www.sographics.co.uk. He is utterly professional, very reasonably priced and exceptionally easy to deal with.

He also provides all hosting and email etc for not very much money.
    • Thanks Nick, I've got a developer who already comes highly recommended and who I've been really impressed with in my contact with him so far.

Pro's cost anywhere between £500- £3000 for basic site. Depending upon platform used or custom made.

We hired a pro some years ago, the website was ok, but we had a lot of problems interms of what we thought he was going to do and when.  It dragged on and on.

So make sure, you have complete ownership of the site, that you have complete control from the front-end and back-end.  If they are hosting be clear about back-ups and how fast they will act to sort out problems.

Are they doing the copy, our guy was less than useful with this.  Is it for a fixed number of pages or can you expand?

If you are uncertain about anything, ask them again & again to clarify, we wish we had!

    • thanks geoffery, some really good points there. I'll be chasing these up. the advantage of using the developer I have in mind is he can see so clearly what our business is about and what we need to communicate to customers - its this marketing expertise as much as the technical support that I want to buy into.

That's good, we didn't realise that our guy was Hungarian, a really nice person but communication was let's say 'random', he's based in Leeds.  We would submit copy, he would add it to the site, but then it would be full of errors, we would notify of the errors, but then he would sort a few of them, and so on.  The best bit was that he told us he was making the site, but in reality it was a Joomla template 'firenzie', nothing wrong with that, just that wasn't what he told us.

  • In about 2004 I used a guide form Virgin media and, by trial and error, did it myself with html.

Until a web hosting problem a couple of years ago this worked well. Now I use Mr Site at about £30 per year. Use their template and fill in the bits, add photos etc. Some hiccups but (with the help of your average teenager nowadays) should be straightforward.
