In an industry that is so weather dependent - how much do you rely on the forecast?

Crystal Ball or high tech guesswork? The Met office celebrates 50 years of using computers to model and predict the weather:

NWP takes the latest observations of the world's weather together with a mathematical model of the atmosphere to produce weather forecasts, the first of which was produced on 2 November 1965.

"It's an amazing scientific achievement that our five day forecast is now as accurate as our one-day forecast was in the 1960s* . These improvements are of huge value to society, helping to save lives, safeguard businesses and protect critical infrastructure in the UK and further afield."

  • I look at the forecast on country file for the week ahead and its reasonably accurate, but if you watch it in the morning they spend half of the time telling you what it has don last night. same as this morning spent most of the time telling us about the first named storm that was going over the north of Scotland and my neck of the woods it would be raining by lunch time. just got loaded up ready to go first thing and it started to throw it down and it lasted nearly all day

  • You need three tools:

Weather radar  Google Met office rain radar & save the link.

Google yr,no & xc weather & save the links.  You need both because each uses a different weather model so take an average of the two.  Just enter your location.

Arcus:  If you have an Android mobile this app will watch the rain radar for you.  It can be remarkably accurate & a godsend.
