triple wall polycarbonate is quite good and is also available in a variety of tints. Be warned though the tinted ones can be much darker than expected when standing under it.
The most important thing with polycarb is detailing the edges to prevent condensation and bugs.
Something like this ? : http://www.breezefree.com/Awnings_Gallery.html or http://www.outriggerawnings.com.au/page/pergola.html
Are you looking for a transparent cover or rain protection when needed? If the latter, consider a sail which can be put up/down quite easily. You can get them made to measure from a sailmakers...might be better value than from an awning company. I think this was the company I used some years ago..http://www.penrosesails.co.uk/
Thanks Simon,
I will research this in more detail. Can you recommend a supplier?
