Wasted driving time....

Managed to waste a huge amount of time this morning on A25 due to a major accident. Unfortunately Radio was not on, so had to sit & slog it out and was not easy to divert.

Got me thinking though - for those of you that have to do 'mileage' in your job and go all over the place - what do you find useful to avoid such situations ?

- Local radio

- Clever SATNAVs (ie TMC etc)

- Highway Agency feeds

- TP setting on Radio?

How do you find it - relevant, accurate, timely ?

Any other suggestions ?

Local radio station, Forth One gives travel updates every 15 mins and covers most roads around Edinburgh. Never have radio off when travelling through rush hour
  • a map

  • As there aren't many roads in Sussex, traffic news is important, dual carriageways get blocked for hours quite easily. I use TP, Sat Nav with traffic function, not to get about just to show me hold ups, even so I still get caught on the dreaded A27

That must be the dreaded A27 in and around Chichester :-( Know it well.....

Is that a satnav with free to air traffic info or a subscription based system ?

    What's that ? ;-)

    a map

  • I feel naked if:

I'm in a garden without Felcos in a holster (even if I am putting in a new lawn)

I'm in a pub without a pint (except when it's my round)

I'm travelling without a map (even if I am on a flight)

Sid knew how to use a map...and carried on up the Khyber

  • just the radio with TA switched on sometimes i don't have the volume turned up so when a TA comes up i nearly jump out of my seat

  • We tune into local radio and we know certain roads are hassle at certain times of the day, i.e. M3, A30, A331 and try to avoid the school run areas!

I try to plan our routes so all the jobs are in a given area, so sometimes if we find the traffic bad we swap the day around go and do a job and hopefully the traffic is ok by then, our customers are ones who don't mind what time/day we come so it works for us. Having said that our business is doing more and more clients with big estates so we don't have that option so much now.

In a moment of boredom I was working out the cost of travel both in paying staff to sit in a van and van costs, its quite a bit!
