Waste carriers licence

We recently applied online for a waste carriers licence, filled in the form, payed the £35 only to receive an email asking for a further £154.Is this a con as on applying there was no mention of further cost. The application simply stated the licence was £35.Also Im not sure if we need a licence as we are only removing green waste. Thanks for reading this and any possible advice gratefully accepted.Cheers,Paul

Not sure where or who you have paid £35 to, but the E A website states the cost at £154 all inc....

    http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/127720.aspx

No mention of a £35 fee on there anywhere......

I carry all sorts of goods, including green waste, bricks, rubble, scrap metal etc so its nice to know I'm always covered.

Incidentally empty scrap pallets (for my woodburner) are classed as waste, so I need a licence for transporting these... at less than £50 a year, its worth it.

  • I have a license and have done since 2000. I cannot find it know but I have seen a post on here within the last year, with a link to the EA site stating that you needed to register ( no charge, green waste only ) free until until december 2013. Charges thereafter. You will still need to fill out your transfer notes though. I will have a search again and try & find the post.

cost are below,  not sure what your £35 was for

Did you by chance use :http://www.wastecarrierslicense.org.uk/registration-form.php

These mention a £35 fee to 'fast track' your application.... no idea who they are, definitely appear NOT to be the EA though...

Looks suspiciously like someone has charged you £35 for the privilege of submitting your details....

  • We tried to renew our licence last month. As we only carry green waste we were told we need not apply until 2013 when we will be put on the the lower tier.

I asked for an email to confirm this and have included it this post. Not sure how to add a pdf doc though

    Hello Martin,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding carrying green waste.

Please find below the circumstances in which a Gardener will have to register in the upper tier.

A customer will need to register as a waste carrier and dealer in the upper tier if:

    • they are carrying out construction or demolition work and carry the waste produced eg. fencing, paving, soil;

A customer will not need to register as a waste carrier if:

    • they carry trimmings, green wastes etc. which they have produced as part of their work even if they have been given a specific instruction.

I have also attached the guidance document as to who does and doesn't need to register as a waste carrier.  You will see from the document that Gardeners carrying only green waste do not need to register in the upper tier but will need to register in the lower tier at the end of Dec 2013.

I trust you find this information useful, if you have any more queries please do let us know and we will be happy to help.

    Many Thanks

  • The License was £154 when I applied online in 2011 and is for 3 years.

  • how long did the process take from initial payment etc to receipt of licence

  • Slighty different but we recently applied to increase our operating license from 2 to 4 lorries.  There was also a £250 fee for the application.  Seemed fair enough.  Then six weeks later the application was approved and we were told we had to pay another £300 to complete the application.  Felt a bit conned, but what can you do?

  • No need for a licence for green waste until Dec 2013 and even then it will be free.

  • Phill,

So, an H&S 'Accreditation Specialist' purchases a .org.uk domain name, and cleverly disguises it as an official EA brokers form.

The 'Regulations', 'License Regulations' and 'Online Registration' links do not even work, see here...

    http://www.wastecarrierslicense.org.uk/

There is no link to the Definitions/Exemptions page on the official EA site, the process to find out if you actually need the license, or not.

    Sheer opportunism. IMO.
