Wasps

Hi everyone

just wondering if anyone else has seen an increase in the number of wasps around. After not being stung for about 10 years I've now been stung 3 times in the past month and  I'm starting to feel persecuted. Maybe I need to change my aftershave or stop washing all together. Any tips on how to entourage the little blighters to keep their distance would be appreciated.

  • in a few weeks time there will be hardly any...it's been a case of avoiding where they hang out... rotting fruit, ivy flowers, tops of conifer hedges for some reason , maybe aphids there that they are attracted to

    • Cheers Billybop, yes I agree they'll soon be more or less gone, I've just never seen so many or had problems with them while working. They've obviously  got the hump about something round here. 👍

  •  there dos not seem to be that many about round here at the moment try midge repelent it might help and carry a tube of anti histermine in the van

There is nothing worse than brush cutting high stuff and going straight through a suspended wasps nest, that really pees them off. My brother was walking his dog with his grand daughter when she walked into a suspended nest. Shane shielded her and was stung about 60 times. Other than the pain and discomfort from the the stings he was fine and just given antihistamines at the hospital. 2 years later he was stung just once on his hand and his tongue and lips swelled so much due to his reaction to the sting it blocked his airway and now has to carry an EpiPen everywhere he goes.

    • That sounds very nasty. I've only once had multiple stings after running a mower over a buried nest and getting about 30 stings. Felt rough for a week. Strangely my mother is highly allergic to bee stings and carries an epi pen but she was stung a couple years back and for some reason didn't have the pen with her but apart from the pain had no other ill effects. So maybe the bodies allergic reaction to things change over the years.

Agree with Billybop - it's the time of year. The queen wasps are about to go into hibernation. They're not laying eggs any more so they don't need the workers to be foraging and bringing in supplies. All of the workers are redundant and they won't survive the winter so and they're basically just hanging around waiting to die. In the meantime, they're feasting on all that lovely rotting fruit. The beggars are also trying to steal honey from beehives and annoying the bees too. So grumpy wasps and grumpy bees.

It might help to distract them with some sweet food well away from where you are working.  A saucer of jam will keep them busy.

    • Ah thanks for that, I didn't realise the males got the elbow once the queen had dispensed with their services. I know how they feel, no wonder they're grumpy. 😂

      • not seen any wasps for days now. however i have a giant asian killer hornet in my living room. luckily it is a specimen in a block of resin. Vespa mandarinia
