  I rub mine with dubbin, they are stiff to start with but soon become supple after rubbing the dubbin into them.

  lether oil will do the same and maby easer to put on you will get it from a saddelers or equine supply store

  Semi-related question. What's a good alternative to leather gloves for someone who doesn't use animal products? The usual cheap rubber-coated workers gloves aren't doing a job when getting up close and personal with the thornier shrubs.
