I rub mine with dubbin, they are stiff to start with but soon become supple after rubbing the dubbin into them.

Semi-related question. What's a good alternative to leather gloves for someone who doesn't use animal products? The usual cheap rubber-coated workers gloves aren't doing a job when getting up close and personal with the thornier shrubs.
