I just dig back to the main plant as far as I can and cut them off - I think they are a very tough plant - we certainly cut one large example from around 8' to 18" and it has sprung back with even more vigour. In fact I was in a garden with one today and noticed it has suckered right under a concrete path ... and is springing up on the other side :(

  •  why not dig them up and pot them on, then you have a new plant!

  • Thankyou Adam and Gary for your replies. As soon as the scroll was unravelled of the original plan I thought, this is one for LSJ.Next week back with a positive way forward and extra plants for her too.win win, thanks again.

  • Hi Andrew,

That's very interesting, iv never seen a davidii send out suckered, any chance of a photo??

    Have a good weekend

    • i've never seen an 8 foot one either!

      • Iv seen one in a clients garden at 6ft... not sure how it got that way but it was boxed in by a Rhodo on one side and an Osmanthus on the other. Might explain it....

  • Viburnum Davidii don't send suckers out but they can layer them self when the branches touch the ground . Are you sure its a Viburnum ?

    • where roots from the crown of the shrub are at soil level they can start sprouting, or where a large root has been damaged, maybe that's the case here, they don't send out 'runners' as such

  • Thankyou to Andrew,Paul and billy bop for your replies.Very interesting reading from your replies.I'm not there till next Thursday but will take some photo's and do a bit of lite digging to chase these suckers/roots back.thanks again.likewise have a good weekend.

off on a slight tangent, who's going to win the Grand Prix.I don't have sky and just watch the high lites in the evening.
