    Some simple tips to start with:

    * Don't take on too much as it's easy to get carried away.

    * Prepare the soil well and add plenty of rich organic matter.

    * Only grow bulletproof plants to start with.

    * Make sure there is good access to water.

    watch where the sun is in their garden, - for most veg you need 6 plus hours of sunshine a day, - some beans and spinach will survive on less, but basically you need a plot with sun. - then i'd suggest the great veg plot by Sarah Raven as a good starting point, - her philosophy is to only grow things that crop well, are easy to look after, and you can't buy in the shops. - so cut and come agains (Courgettes, spinach, chard, lettuce, beans) are high on the list as are yellow courgettes, purple beans, tomatoes.

    Divide the area into 4 so that you can allow for crop rotation in future years.
    Make sure there is an adequate water supply. Dragging containers of water around is no fun!
    Make notes at the end of each season to consider what has worked well, what you wouldn't want to grow again etc

    Thanks folks -useful advice, especially about having water nearby and not trying to do too much. Guess what I'll be doing at the weekend...hope the weather stays good.
