VAT registration

who here runs a garden maintenance business and is Vat registered?

Im currently wondering if a garden maintenance business that is VAT registered has its place in a domestic market or if i will out price myself out of the market.

Adding 20% onto my prices seems like a large ask of my customers, but would have to if i wish to grow any more.

How did others go about this move?

I would like to hear peoples stories about there move into adding VAT in domestic gardening.

It seems like a great hurdle to me.

  • Having to regester for VAT really killed my passion for this line of work.

It's been a constant nightmare trying to keep up with the VAT man. Every 3 months I feel like I'm finally starting to save a few quid and then the bill arrives and I may as well have stated at home.

Either avoid it at all costs or just jump in head first and try to push past this pain point.

Look at your average t/o and back calculate monthly vat and ‘sweep’ it aside into a business savings account.

.... or use an accounts package and have it do the ‘work’ for you

Then at quarter end there’s no surprises ...

  • Don't forget that you can reclaim the VAT on your bills and receipts that you currently have to absorb, so your vatable costs reduce by 20%. When pricing up private garden maintenance, I always price "£xxxxx per annum inc VAT at current rate".
