Van (LCV) after market mechanical warranties

I've had a look at the attached Van (LCV) Mechincal Warranty company after being told about it by a friend :

http://www.warrantyworks.co.uk/

It will cover Vans, cars & motorbikes - has breakdown cover (limited to failed items), european cover etc.

Inclusions & exclusions seem reasonable.

Just wondering if it makes sense giving the cost of hiring a replacement, the hassle, the downtime, guys kicking heels etc.

Has anyone gone down the route of a having an aftermarket mechanical warranty once the makers warranty has expired, given that our vehicles are such a key item to running our businesses ?

If so, care to share experiences ?

  • it has to be serviced , which you would do anyway. you mot vehicle now.

    you look after your vehicle , check oil, water etc tyres, bulbs..

    its got to be no more than 10 yrs old vehicle --- hint hint here folks !!

    thought about it many times , one for my jeep is £550-£600 now , if i put this in bank for 'if' it goes wrong it should cover repair if required .............. although mine is expensive if it broke.

    not 4me !! you have rac/aa cover too... its another cost :(
  • http://www.warrantyworks.co.uk/registrationProcess.jsp

    claims limit ! £250 ............................ for £269 one-off payment (not monthly)

    only one winner -again :/

    Not sure about your quote/vehicle but for one of ours;

    6 yr old Vivaro
    Max claim limit : £1000 (lower limit for Audio systems etc)
    Max claims per year : £5000
    Cover : Premium
    Costs : £ 194.38

    'KEYFACTS:'
    ELIGIBILITY APPLICABLE TO VEHICLES UP TO A MAXIMUM OF 12 YEARS OLD HAVING COVERED LESS THAN 120,000 MILES AT THE DATE OF INCEPTION;

    ALL MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS THAT WERE FITTED BY THE MANUFACTURER
    Additionally it covers the following manufacturer's original fit items:-

    1.In Car entertainment systems (up to 25% of the policy claim limit, maximum claim £500)

    2.Air Conditioning and Climate Control (up to 40% of your claim limit)

    3.Satellite Navigation (up to 25% of the policy claim limit, maximum claim £500)

    4.Catalytic Converter(on payment of additional premium and vehicle less than 5 years old when policy commences

    And it includes breakdown & european cover due to failed item

    Where did you see your details - double check ?

    On the face of it could make sense. Our vans get hard use and do sometimes breakdown;

    So;
    - 2 -3 days van hire (~£100)
    - Team of two sitting around for a day waiting for things to happen - Cost ?
    - 'My temper/hassle factor' - priceless !
  • well as my dad is a mechanic then no, and i am quite mechanically minded aswell, i have a classic car that ive restored in my garage.

    that cover is aimed more towards people that dont have a clue about the mechanics of a car but the terms are a bit iffy usually.

    Appreciate the point, but if you are running a landscape company do you want or have the time to get involved in fixing a van (now, whether I know how to or not is another point..) while a team kicks it's heels, a client complains about a no-show and then get hit for a large bill?

    That's the issue I'm considering....

    Now, If I had nothing to do and could afford to spend a week sorting a Van out - that would be different....But then I'd be a mechanic...;-)
  • ive usually got a couple of vehicles on the go so downtime isnt usually an issue. and i have a drive and lighting so i can do repairs through the night. even with the "warrenty" it doesnt cover things like starter motors, clutches, head gaskets etc and you will still have the down time.

    Here's the exclusions (which seem fair) and will/does not include fair wear & tear.

    • All bodywork and trim, seat belts, glass,
    sunroof panels, fuel tank, wheels and tyres,
    hinges, brake facings, seized calipers
    • The renewal of any clutch component due to
    incorrect adjustment, misuse or general wear
    and tear
    • The clearing of fuel lines, filters, carburettors
    and pumps
    • Air bags
    • HT Leads, spark plugs, filters, wiper blades,
    lights and bulbs, belts, wiring looms,
    glow plugs
    • Exhaust manifold, exhaust system, brackets,
    mountings and hoses, water ingress, cables
    • Worn or leaking seals and cylinders
    • Battery

    However, I go back to my point - I run a landscaping company.

    I do not want to spend my nights in the freezing cold, on driveway repairing vans

    Had far too much of that in my youth rebuilding mk1 & mk2 mini-coopers....;-0)
  • whats your milage on vauxhall ? what to go wrong ? engine/ gearbox /w-pump ? why

    if it works for you fine , mine is 130k fsh (but wont go wrong anyway, thats why i didnt buy a ;fiat;)

  • if you take all those excluded items away then i cant think of much that would be left.

    We've one like yours >100k, the other ~70k and Renualt trafic variants at lower mileage.....

    the 100k one has had it's high pressure fuel pump let go (which would have been covered) - cost £2k to finally repair, problems on ABS sensors, failed engine mounts, dash & control panel lights all go, faulty reversing sensor CPU, wiring connection on ECU. Gear selector cable been replaced twice, now concerned gearbox is going (which is is common)

    We hope its a Friday afternoon machine.

    Was in and out of dealer for months, each time costing us hire van & lost time....

    Also, when you are an employer, you have a duty of care re: supply vehicles to employees to use. What you and I might 'overlook/ignore' can not be done if an employee if driving a knowingly failing/dangerous vehicle. The liability implications are frightening ....
