Unsafe steps on Monty Don's Big Dreams Small Spaces

Did anyone watch Monty Don's Big Dreams Small Spaces (episode #4) last night?

I do wonder if the researchers think about the hard landscaping at all?

The steps on the courtyard garden were/are exremely unsafe. Every riser is a different height and could lead to accidents.

I love watching Monty Don and he clearly knows and loves his plants but his hard landscaping knowledge is practically zero.

Here's a screenshot of the steps..

  • Mmm.. I guess that they were working largely with what they had, or were these created from scratch? It's not really rocket science is it? A desire to do a good job irons out a lot of issues, but some poeple simply don't have an eye for detail. We're all different and must play to our strengths.

I was almost a particpant in the first series, went through qute a bit of screening with the production cmpany, including sending photo! It became eveident to me though that I'd have to cram the space inappropriately for the 'show' element, or that's how I read it Given the money that was needed for the design, I wasn't prepared to compromise on the long term wellbeing of the garden. I guess that you could say that by that time, although only an enthusiast on an RHS course, I knew too much about proper horticulture to be willing to fudge it in any way.

These steps were built from scratch, Jo.

The unequal riser heights are not the only health and safety issues.

The rill coming straight from the bottom step as well as traversing across an access way holds much potential for injury.

    • I agree re: rill Phil. This is TV!

Sadly, impact means more than good praactice obviously.

  • Q. DIY?? DIWhy?

    A. Why not?

    A. Beacuse you will fall over. Because someone else will fall over. Because they could sue you after they have fallen over. Because it doesn't comply with building regs.

It begs the question. How much detail does one need on a garden design plan?

  • To give Monty Don some slack the steps were made by the garden owners when Monty wasn’t there along with a shocking dry stone retaining wall. Monty seemed to go in and look and advice rather than do any hard landscaping. Do building or any other regulations apply to work in your own garden? The problem is with this programme as they are doing the work themselves should the pro go in afterwards and tell them it is rubbish? Or maybe they should have been stopped by the programme horticultural and landscaping advisors that I am sure were about for most of it as I imagine Don was only paid for a short appearance.
