How do you get on using a tripod ladder taller than the hedge you're cutting?  Are photos using them like this practical?

I cut a variety of heights and only want to buy one new ladder to rule them all.

I currently use a folding combination ladder with stabilizers which is good for soft ground to stand 1 m up, and a Henchman 4 legged fully adjustable platform to stand up to 2.2 m.   The platform is really flexible with different surfaces and slopes, and gives me a big stable place to stand and move about with a long reach hedge cutter.  However, it's getting elderly, is heavy to move about and slow to assemble.

Any thoughts or suggestions please?

  • Yes that photo shows you would struggle to find anything less suitable to cut that particular hedge from. I have a large tripod and it only gets used several times per year, perfect for certain jobs but for day to day use more of a hindrance

I have two tripod ladders, 8ft henchman and 12ft from orchard ladders, both have three extendable legs adding an extra foot and half. Been using them three years now, great ladders.

Ive cut a 10ft hedge with the 12th foot ladder. It not ideal the top of the ladder gets in the way. Best to have the ladder the same hight or a bit lower than the hedge.

Using ladder like the picture you provided is not comfortable, again the ladder gets in the way especially with my preference of using a long handle hedge cutter.

    • Maybe I'm going to be looking to upgrade my old steel platform for an aluminum version...thanks

Started out with a platform Tim which served me well but then upgraded to a 12 foot henchman with extendable legs which is very light and improved efficiency with total piece of mind where safety is concerned .

Have never adopted that position as per illustration photo personally you can get closer to the job by putting the front leg through the hedge if needed .

Game changer when trimming pleached hedges .

My take is I have kept my old platform as back up and also have the benefits of the henchman but for some jobs the henchman can be ottp .

    • Might have to use this as an excuse to get more stuff!

You won't regret it, they are most comfortable ladders to use. Worth every penny.

I agree with HB. 12 foot Henchman with 3 adjustable legs are fantastic and we use them all the time.

i have two sizes and couldnt be without them, as use the smaller set for lower hedges so ladders never in the way and ive never bothered with the platform ladders

  • Tripods are better than any other ladder that's a fact. You can cut hedges that are lower than the ladder but it is more awkward, I have a 6ft amd a 12 foot been using both for the last 15yrs and haven't come stuck yet. Believe me once you've had one you won't go back.
