Travel cost

Hi All

Just looking at a new tender for maintenance on multiple sites.... I've been asked for a cost per mile for traveling.....something I've not looked at, we generally put travelling in on the price....now obviously I can just divide what I usually charge down into the miles but was really wondering if there is some sort of standard figure people work to?

Many thanks

I'm intrigued to hear what others opinions are on this, personally I would talk to the client and say that you don't quite understand the need for this as it is totally irrelevant. You may not necessarily travel to all of there sites consecutively, if you already have multiple sites you may be starting at a site 20 miles away one day and another from 2 miles away but that is your cost as a contractor to bear it isn't going to affect the cost the client has to pay. Not sure how I would cost it at all, maybe someone on here has experience it this

  • do they just want the running cost for your truck or your time as well

running costs its everythin you pay out for the truck in a year devid by the miles you do dont forger tyers

and check you are not going into any controle zones if so what cost will you be doing multiple sites in the same day

it seem like thay only want to pay you when you are on site and a few quid for travel as jake says try get some clarification

  • We also maintain multiple sites for a private health care provider and a property management company,  in 40 years never been asked for this and can't understand why they want this. Surely it's the cost per individual site or all the sites which is the important bit ? As Jake says it's irrelevant,  what if you work for other clients that are close to these sites how do you possibly divide travel costs up? Can't help but thinking that there's more to this than meets the eye. I would refuse saying you'll give them a price for the tender and that's it. If they push you give them a notional 50 p per mile and adjust your quote accordingly.  Strange one.

  • could it just be a standard question they put on all their tenders, which doesn't really apply to the regular grounds maintenance aspect, for example an on-call service of various trades to fix infrequent faults

Sounds like they could be wanting to organise your work schedule at the various sites and allocate the tasks productively to prevent you making any unnecessary journeys which would add mileage to the cost .

They have the advantage of knowing their sites and will prioritise work and frequency of visits  accordingly perhaps .
