Unfortunately Tordon withdrawal means you will probably be out of luck - but you can in principle still buy it up until the 30th June 2014 if you can find any - here's the info from CRD.

    a) 31 December 2013 for sale and distribution by the authorisation holder
    (b) 30 June 2014 for sale and distribution by persons other than the authorisation holder
    (b) 30 June 2015 for the disposal, storage and use of existing stocks by any persons

Most people are going down the glyphosate root with a number now moving towards the new RoundUp ProBio 360g/lt to take advantage of the improved adjuvants, rainfastness & efficacy in hardwater areas, but the RoundUP 450 is still popular too.

Obviously, as I am sure you are aware, the key to getting a good result is based on choosing the correct method of control for the different growth stages of JKW.  The government website for Invasive and Injurious Weeds gives some really good guidance.

Additionally if you want you can email me at info@progreen.co.uk and we will happily send out a PDF that we have on the control of Japanese Knotweed, which people have in the past found useful.

You also have the option - if you want any other advice of speaking to Richard one of our Technical Advisors - who can lay the claim to being one of a handful of people in the UK who are BASIS Amenity qualified in the area of 'Injurious and Invasive Weeds' ...so JKW, Himalayan Balsam, Giant Hogweed - plus all the other usual general areas and he is always happy to have a chat.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Neil,

I've just seen you have posted that you are looking for a replacement for Tordon 22K. I did add a post a while ago about this. The link is below.

    http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/tordon-22k-replac...

We are finding that a lot of invasive weed control contractors are using Broadshot or Scimitar as a replacement and are having good results from it. It also benefits from having a much wider range of use than some of the alternative products, such as amenity turf, forestry and industrial sites.

As others have said, Roundup works well too, especially the Pro Biactive 450 and there is also the option of using an Aminopyralid based product such as Icade which we can supply. This cannot be sold over the web due to the Stewardship that surrounds it and it also has a very restricted field of use.

I have over 10 years experience of controlling various invasive weeds and we have also been carrying out extensive trials into replacement products for Tordon 22K with several contractors. We would be more than happy to discuss the various options available to you if you wanted to call on 0800 133 7849 or you can email ollie.wright@agrigem.co.uk

  • Recent research is indicating Tordon isn't the best for Japanese knotweed treatment as it only offers a temporary barrier to plant growth above the ground surface and doesn't deal with the rhizome material below ground. It is a hazardous chemical and so many people are using it illegally (in gardens on slopes, near water) it is being banned.

Glyphosate being systemic is drawn down further into the rhizome although how far isn't know. It is supposed to be less harmful and better for knotweed treatment in the longer term but many people are using off label even glyphosate again illegal SO FOLLOW THE PRODUCT LABEL! The manufactures give you the legal doses so use them!

An area that interests me; Can you identify the research and the issue being seen with Glyphosate being used illegally (ie how?) for us to learn from ?

  • round up 450 done the job injected neat into the stems worked, I also seen clinic ace diluted at 50:1 taking it out although this was a small JKW

  • Provided you follow the product label for roundup pro bio then you will be complying with the law!! I have just re read the product label as we have used it previously

  • Theirs a reason network rail, the public sector and most operators stick to Glyphosate - It might takea while for complete control - but its pretty much the most comprehensive way of killing JKN.

If you think you killed it in one treatment - you WILL need to return a couple of years running to make sure their is no re-growth - It has a nasty habit of re-appearing in a straggly form a couple of years later and back to normal theirafter.

  • We just spray any re growth once its around 1ft tall
