Topiary of conifer

I took a telephone call from Sue Benjamin yesterday; Sue works at a clinic and they have this conifer at the front of their premises. She would like to know a) is it possible to shape the conifer into a butterfly and b) is there a member close to her location who may be able to help? Dudden Hill Lane London NW10 1AU Email: contact@lasercosmetic.co.uk Here's her message: Hi Philip Further to our telephone conversation yesterday, I am attaching photo for you to see if this conifer would be suitable for topiary? If it is, I need it shaped as a 'butterfly' and would be grateful if you could recommend the right person for the job! Many thanks for your help. Kind regards Sue Benjamin

  • it looks to me to be some form of chamaecyparis, (photo not that close up) so the answer is no, it won't go into topiary, as it won't grow from cut wood. - The only plants that you can do that intricate shapes from at that size ( that I know ) are Buxus Sempervirens and Taxus Baccata, which would take a long time to get to that size

    Hi Claire

I've just put the phone down to Sue. I agree with what you say and that is what I've told her.
I've advised her to buy a bespoke topiary frame and plant a Box herself.

However, if there is someone interested she is happy to talk.

  • i've used Lonicera Nitida for topiary up to about 3 ft high, but don't think it would get to that size, the only large plants i've seen are very scraggy.
