Hi Stephen, personally I'd say if you're not confident, don't do it. It's not worth harming your reputation for. I wouldn't be happy doing it. There's bound to be a topiary expert on here, but my opinion is that the tree is too mature to spiral and I would be weary of putting in a great deal of work, just for the client to refuse payment on the grounds of it not living upto their expectations. Sometimes saying "no" helps your business more than trying to please everyone, have your boundaries and stick to them.

    • Cheers guys, I think tbh I'm going to message and explain I've researched into them and they would be better suited to a general tidy/ height reduction

I'm more comfortable carrying out that job.

  • to avoid ruining them only a light trim is possible, if you go back into the old wood they never recover. Also can be difficult with conifers like this as the sprays of foliage grow in awkward directions which defy a simple once over with a hedge trimmer

    • Cheers billybop I'm going to speak with customer tomorrow

      • cheers steve best of luck. i think the conifers would look good trimmed into a uniform oval ball shape making them look like one yin/yang style bicolour design, where the 2 different varieties have grown into each other. You can't blame people for dreaming but the spiral idea is likely a lock down induced fantasy sadly

  •  they have been let go too long without regular maintainance and the three have growen into each other the best you will achieve is shallow lines round them which will dissapear in a few months you will not achieve anythin like thees

No unless they will pay for A three year programme. Billy bop is correct cut into old wood they won't grow back. All topiary needs to be done over many years and on softbnew growth. Only the outer edge is green and workable so just round offf or flat top. If they insist on no a long term programme you could work it but the regrowth would be different for each tree. My choice do what's easiest and move on

  • Definitely a case of letting someone else having a go and watching from afar!

  • Cheers people

Email ready to send this morning!!

Thanks again. Another great help from the forum!!
