Tool insurance

I've been Doing this amazing job for 15 years and got all my insurances but never bothered with tool insurance. I'm buying a new £12k John deere x590 and I've got most Stihl kit in the kombi range and 8 or so battery tools and £1k of batteries.
My question is do many of you insure your tools and what kind of price do ü pay?
it will be either locked in the transit  van or the ride on will be secured in a locked shipping container. I don't have insurance for been off work as I've had bad experiences with that in the past. So do they pay out favourably when kit gets stolen ?

  • I had cover for the first couple of years & then realised that most insurers only cover tools upto two years old, or pro-rata. So decided it's probably not worth it for me personally. I have well over 10k of kit as I am also a Handyman, so need mor kit. Most of my stuff is locked up in the workshop & only goes in the van when needed & a pretty secure area.

I have also invested in securedna as well which cost £160 but has far more uses than just kit. You also get lots of stickers etc. to put on the van & storage sites to deter the thieving B****s

  • i think you will find it difficult to get cover for tools left overnight in a van unless the van is parked in a garage as the thieves seem to be able to unlock vans quickley and lock them up again after they have emptyed it

    • I have a tools policy with A-plan. It covers tools in transit, in van over night, in a customers shed/garage, and of course at home. So long as the van or garage is locked. Never claimed yet but they seem a decent firm.

And as Peter says below, it's not actually that expensive.

  • After 40 years with a few losses with theft we decided to insure after a friend in the trades van caught fire with the loss of over £20k worth of kit which wasn't insured!

We pay in the low hundreds for £20k cover on a new for old basis, we use Pace Ward brokers in Stoke on Trent who will advise on the most appropriate and cost effective cover. Might never happen but what if it does?

After Four non destructive entry and van locked back up i dont take out any van tool insurance as there is no evidence of entry or repair needed to the vehicle i cant see an insurance company paying out .

After the first entry i didn't even bother reporting it to the police although some of my stolen items turned up on a building site where they had later raided the builders vans , Having marked one item it resulted in the site foreman contacting me which lead to a small recovery , obviously they had dumped my inferior tackle to make space for the builders gear .

  • I had some kit stolen from a van about 5 years ago and the insurance paid out what i claimed for (with reciepts) I had tools in transit cover including stored in the van overnight on my driveway, which is where it was parked!

They unlocked it with no sign of entry, but they did cause some minor damage levering the side cargo door past the deadlocks i had fitted, so there was some visual proof of breaking in.
