i use a Stihl FSA85 battery strimmer for this, as it's easier to regulate the power so there is no danger to windows etc. It canes the line a bit as it gets worn down by hitting the hard surfaces but is a very fast method of making the neglected patio/ block pavior area look much better. Followed by a quick blast of the Ego blower to clean off the loose debris, job done
As Billybop says, just use a strimmer but carefully!..... I use an FS94........ slowish speed and use it so any debris goes away from windows. I've seen some poor elderly people on their hands and knees scraping them out taking forever......... I've felt the urge to get the strimmer out and giving them a free hand... in a couple of minutes, could save them hours! Weedkill in the future to keep it clear.
I control the weeds on an old cobbled driveway. The obvious answer and how I do it is with regular applications of Glyphosate.
Using the strimmer is a very quick and easy way to do it if starting from scratch. I find that a powerful strimmer with 3mm square line is the best bet.
A more powerful machine has far more torque, therefore you can feather the trigger and the torque will turn the head slowly enough not to fire stones with enough speed to cause damage, but with enough oomph to remove the weeds.
There is also the Stihl RG-KM, which is designed for this kind of job.
Roundup.
When it comes to handtools have tried many but always go back to the wolf garten patio weeder as it connects to a suitable long shaft and the steel edge becomes sharper with use .
For kneeling put it on a short handle , Also have burgon and ball serrated lawn weed knife which is effective in patio slabs and those long handled brass brushes are okay but wear down quickly .
For dead moss I use a Wickes tough plastic shovel .
Tedious , painstaking work but satisfying results until the weeds reappear .
Worth remembering Roundup/Gylphosate is not "type approved" for 'blanket' spraying on hard/non-porus surfaces but you can 'spot' spray active weeds. Maybe best to spot spray - leave - strim ?
As mentioned above, the Stihl KM-RG is a useful tool (especially near gravel etc).
ps. If you're brave, insured and away from other dry vegetation you could always use a turbo parafin burner (may not be best solution currently ;-)
