Today is the first day of spring - what is the vernal equinox?

We can all celebrate - or at least everyone living in the nothern hemisphere - because today is the first day of spring.

Today the length of day and night are equal. From today the daylight hours will be much longer than night time with the days getting progressively longer (until the summer equinox on the 20 June).

We can also (hopefully) look forward to warmer days:-))

    When does spring start?  The difference between the meteorological & astronomical season - never realised there were so many ways to look at it....... Met office
