To Roller or not!

Hi All

I am going to get a new lawnmower now I know you may say get a lawnmower with a roller! The one, I have been using is in for repair!

Two questions for you!

1] I have a small caddy van what would you say will be the best size to get or the minimum size I was thinking of a 17-inch up to the 19-inch  blade Honda, please! (if the supplier has them?) Most of the lawns are not that big too!

2] Some of the lawns I am cutting are not flat and have dips and humps! Is best to have 4 wheels or will a roller still be OK for this sort of ground, please?

Thanks

Brian

  • What about a Honda HRX 476 or one of the Hayters  they have honda engines on.

I mowed a lawn about 2 week ago with the danarm 21 inch roller this particular garden had a mole or 2 last year ( little ******** ) so the lawn is very uneven I thought I give it a go and it went much better than I thought it would , sailed over the divets and over the bumps with easy . When I use 4 wheel mow and don't see the divet / hole I end up walking into the mower when it bottoms out. I am not saying they are suitable but on this one time I used it on a uneven lawn it was perfectly fine.

I'd agree with Andrew for getting in out of a small van the hrx 476 4 wheel has a drag strip which creates stripes can collect or mulch snd are lighter than a roller with a rigid plastic body

    • Thanks, Andrew that a great help! Have you for the HRX 476 QY one, please

I have a client lawn that been attached by baggers and it a mess! So good to know I may be OK with the roller on it!

      Thanks Brian

We have 3 main mowers, there  is an old 21" John Deere standard 4 wheel one that is the go to machine. A wee Stihl battery one, great for small or difficult access lawns, or banks. Then there is an old 21" Honda roller. Without doubt the Honda gives the best looking cut. But it is a heavy beast, so it only gets used where we either need both of us mowing to get through the job quickly, or where we know the stripes and finish are really appreciated.

The JD can be used in all weathers, the Stihl in most, if the ground is waterlogged or the grass too wet the Honda sinks in, doesn't grip etc etc.....but in the right conditions it is the best

    • Hi, Adam Thanks for the information it is a great help!

Do you think a small roller like a 17 or 19 ch one will cope better in the wet, please?

      Thanks Brian

Around three weeks ago my travels took me to Hertfordshire to an extremely nice house on an “estate” the like of which we do not have around here with houses valued at £1.5M to over £2M.

It’s a landscape and maintenance gardeners dream, I was stood drinking a cup of coffee talking to the lady customer, at a distance of course, and passed comment about how smart her garden looks particularly the chequer board stripes in her lawn.

She said the two young lads who mow her lawn do so every week mowing diagonally alternating the cut direction, but following the lines from two weeks beforehand.

It really did look good and it was the general standard being maintained across the whole estate, but I don’t see it being done around home. You need the right customers to be able to work to those standards.
