Tipper trailer.

Im thinking of buying a 2 tonne carrying tipper trailer.

What I would like to know if anyone can help is there any restrictions or insurance issues with this I passed my driving test over 20yrs ago. Do I need to pass any other tests? I was also told that I would need a tacho fitted Is this true?

Any input would be much appreciated.

If your licensed to drive a 7.5 tonne truck and your towing vehicle is a 3.5 tonne gross load weighted then you will be fine. With trailers and licenses its all about train weight, the combined vehicle and trailer when loaded weight. Theres a few posts on this issue and it does get complicated. Use the search field above for the previous posts also depends on the towing capacity of your vehicle
  • If you have passed your test over 20 years ago, I think you should be okay, as Brian said, check the forum, as I'm sure there are some posts on this matter.

On the tipping trailer aspect, I'm sure this would be a very useful investment for your business. A friend of mine has an Ifor Williams tipping trailer and he uses it all the time, much easier than shovelling rubbish off a trailer!

  • I was unsure about the law and pulling trailers so i phoned vosa and they told me

if you are carrying your own tools machines or materials and have the correct license to tow a trailer as long as the over all weigh of the car trailer and load is not more than 7.5 ton and you are within 30 miles of your registered home / business you do not need a tacho.

if you look on the back of your license it tells you what you can drive. if you have had your licence for over 20 years you will be able to drive with a trailer

  • Its 100km from base without a tacho for agri, hort, forestry and fishing. any other services then its 50km. If you are delivering goods for sale i.e. builders merchant or cars on a trailer then you need a tacho at all times.

Just buy it, we have an Ifor TT126 with a cage and its one of the best investments we have ever made.

You have to check your vehicles towing capacity. Our sprinters are only 2.2t for the trailer + load so its easy to get caught out if your not careful. Most iveco's and 4x4's can pull the full 3.5t. Thats why the gas board and other utility companies use iveco's for towing the mini diggers. Sprinters can be ordered new from the factory uprated to to 3.5t  (out of my leauge)  and there will be a few rare used ones knocking about but they are hard to find.

  • Thanks for all the helpful replies guys. that`s pretty much all my questions answered in one hit.. love this network!
