They’re showing us that the future is digital

"The newspaper industry is changing, and that change is being driven by readers,” said Lebedev. “They’re showing us that the future is digital. This decision preserves the Independent brand and allows us to continue to invest in the high quality editorial content that is attracting more and more readers to our online platforms.”

The Independent & Independent on Sunday to close: http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/feb/12/independent-and-independent-on-sunday-closures-confirmed

This must be a wake up call. Not only to those who own and run printed media operations but also to those committing large marketing budgets to printed media.

I saw this earlier and think people will look back at this in the future and recognise it was a pivotal moment.

i is my paper of choice during the week and hope it continues as there is still something 'emotional' about picking up up a paper or book to read. I am not convinced the current crop of e-readers do the task justice, so wonder what we will see in terms of technology changes to support online reading.

Will we now also see the acceptance and further use of online paywalls to gain access to information?

    It's surely is a wake-up call....

"there is still something 'emotional' about picking up up a paper or book to read"

I think that's undeniable Gary. The problem is that the business argument doesn't factor in emotion. It;s all about numbers and costs. Printed media costs are only set to rise - postage, paper, labour - but the relative circulation of each magazine/newspaper is only set to continue in decline.

  • For sure many of the younger generation don't seem to buy newspapers, but then nor did I - now I can not do without my 'Daily Fix'. Not all innovations take off and I think this could be one.  Maybe the Independent just wasn't a very good product.

We've (my wife and I) not bought a print edition of a newspaper for 2 years at least as we have subscribed to the times. We had the paper copy for years and got sick of all the paper stacking up.
Now read on an iPad etc and it's one of the things I like about it as its all there but in a much smaller package!
Still buy physical books though but do read some on kindle.
It's one of the new tech that I actually like!!
