Hi Oliver, I got my thermal undies from peacocks, nice and cheap brought six, had them for 12 yrs.

I've got some fleece hunter wheelie sock liners that fold over the top of the boots.

I wear brace's in the winter. It reduces heat lost from the builders cleavage. Currently wearing camo brace's, made by brimarc. Heavy duty lots of different colours. I use brace's on my water proof trousers aswell.

Overalls are very good for an extra layer.

Shows thermal gloves. A necker scarf.

I always grow a beard for winter. The tash alone is in valuable, I never get chapped lips.

  • Hi Oliver,

I get my thermals underwear at sports direct. Socks are the para type wool ones, with thermal slip on over socks that go over them. Thermal gloves and away I go.Its mild as anything over here at the minute mind, so I dont gear up fully .its not balaclava time yet but they are a godsend when rose pruning in Janurary.

    Have a happy xmas

Why are you pruning roses in January?

      • Hi Dave,

There a few factors which have led to this ,the primary being the work schedule ,in that with some gardens I do only a summer and winter pruning(hedges, shrubs and pleaches etc,I cant come back just to prune the Rose's which are mostly shrub Rose's anyway. The types and ages of the Rose's and the milder climate over the past few years over here also have allowed me to prune through the winter. I have not had a problem yet anyway.

        Best

        • Rose pruning methods are steeped in tradition. As you know, modern shrub roses are very tolerant, I have one customer who insists on me cutting his roses back to almost ground level on my last visit in November! They produce amazing displays year after year. I've pruned plenty of roses all through the winter to no I'll-effect.

Yes I'm a obsessive traditionalist when it comes to pruning roses. In October/November all climbers are pruned and tied in. In November all shrub roses, hybrid teas and florabunda, I remove a third to one half of new growth, mainly due to wind rock. Then In march I prune to the desired hight and remove any die back, thin and formative pruning.

Seasons and approach to rose pruning has changed over recent years, including RHS advice becoming less specific...

          •  We are not getting traditional winters over here for the moment and in fact we tend to get very late sharp frosts in spring which play havoc with new growth on some Rose's and Hydrangeas etc. Certainly two of the last five years went with hardly anything more than a bit of winter frost(one of them not even frost) , where as 10 years ago we were using blow torches to defrost around trees in the nurseries in winter, so we could lift out of the ground and work. Could be we will be snowed in for 6 months now Iv said all this. But you get where I am going..

Instresting how everyone's practices differ. I agree with the weather. Shrub roses are tough. Your schedule is your schedule.

  • Kirkland merino wool socks are the best. I wear them all year round, they are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. If wearing with wellies, I tend to put two pairs on, this eliminates the slipping down.
