In spite of the harsh Winter my plantings, at South Queensferry Edinburgh, in troughs, pots, and balcony boxes carried out in October have worked. Temperature never rose above -5C and went a lot lower at night for more than a week over Hogmanay. The courtyard is surrounded by buildings so no sun at all reaches these planters from November to January . I was not sure that the B&Q budget packs of mixed Narcissus and red short-stem Tulips would perform. The balcony boxes are from Urban Garden, Zinc, matt black finish with a liner. There are various brackets to fit every size of railings. http://www.theurbangarden.co.uk/

  • Hi Anne,
its does surprise me how hardy some of the plants have been this yr, your bulbs look nice and healthy! I was walking round my garden tonight and there are some things that look so much better than last yr even after all that snow/frost - my rhubarb is going mad at the moment and is about ready to be cut - yum!
  • Yes this winter has been a really odd one and has exposed many of the plants that we'd started to take for granted as being, actually, not very hardy!
Having said that I have a few pots of agapanthus that I've grown from seed taken from Bryher on the Scilly isles. You'd think that hardiness wasn't programmed into their genetics but they've almost all survived being frozen down to minus 12 in the Cotswolds! I now have some hope that they might even flower one day!

  • Sounds like my seedling Clematis, given to me in a smallish pot by a friend and not transplanted before the winter arrived......now sporting 4 fat buds ! Lucky you Cotswolds and Scilly Isles.

  • Hi Anne,

My Hardy Green Banana (Musa basjoo) has been in the ground for 3 years. Each winter I wonder if it will make it through. This year I was very doubtful. The stump was covered in straw and fleece, and at one point when it was really cold, the cushions off my old sofa.

Well you can imagine my delight yesterday when I dicovered six new shoots appearing from the base.

Now thats what I call a hardy banana!

Just come back from America and if you think we have a pollen problem here you would hate it over there, it was like 5mm thick in places and that is no exageration.

One down side to this years amazing late spring display is that the pollen readings are off the scale. Thank god for hay fever tablets, - do they work on volcanic ash ?
  • Amazing !
