I've just seen a Tweet come out of BALI exclaiming that 2014 will be a good year for landscaping. No explanation about why next year will be good (perhaps just wishful thinking?).

The data I'm collecting and reading suggests that 2014 will be far from rosy when viewed at an industry-wide level. I see continued difficulties in the landscape market, especially as the government is removing their support for new house buyers.

With this week's news that household incomes are ever decreasing there is also worrying signs that people who are self-employed are seeing their annual net revenue incomes plummet.

"Using HMRC data on the number of self employed people the average, inflation adjusted, earnings of those who are self employed fell from just under £15,000 a year at the turn of the century to £10,400 in 2011, a real decline of just over 31%"

  • I know of a lot off makers who are having a very hard time at the moment ,not good with staff too pay .

  • is that supposed to be gross or net?

not being funny phil, but if a self employed person is only earning that (and it's an average, so they're saying some earna lot less), then they're either not full time, quite good at tax evasion or in the wrong career.

  • I suspect that the figure is the salary element after all business expenses have been deducted.

I know quite a few taxi drivers, mortgage brokers and the like who are and have been struggling for the last few years but when questioned as to why continue most say that its better than being a wage slave and you take the bad years along with the good ones.

Now I earn very little myself but have more disposable income :-)
