  • Broken down, as in ran out of charge? or some other fault.... am sticking with my reliable diesel at the moment but occasionally look online at used electric vans out of curiosity...but they just don't seem cheap enough yet, to my mind...and the renault kangoos have some kind of lease deal on the battery which is a major turn off

    • As in broken. Yet to find anyone who has a good word to say about them, very limited real world range compared to manufacturers claims, precipice residual values. Amazon in our area have gone back to diesel. Majority seem to be run by large companies trying to prove their eco credentials, drivers like them as they can spend long periods of time doing the Times crossword instead of working while they charge and still get paid. Will be buying one when hell freezes over!

      • I would pay a couple or 3 grand for a new-ish one, might be a fun runaround for light local work, go to a few weekend car boot sales maybe, as all these big companies are handing them back in disgust at the inconvenience am surprised they aren't at give away prices yet, a cheap one could end up being quite a bargain, if it lasts, and scrap it when something expensive goes wrong. I use all battery gardening kit and love it but an electric van is another matter !

        • This might be just the thing for you!

          • love it tim thanks that looks just the ticket....i remember the local dairies milk floats years ago I assume electric to keep the noise down when doing the rounds in the early hours, just the clinking of the glass bottles was audible, lead acid batteries of course and it seemed to work fine for them.  I felt we lost something when they closed down and the newer companies delivery vans were diesels, nobody around here at least has milk delivered any more anyhow

        • I am really really disappointed to hear that NOT all of your kit is battery power Billy. frown

          • Lol yes I feel ashamed Neil... however with my vehicle of choice being a single cab pickup I have yet to see an electric model. Am not averse to EVs in general in fact I registered a brand new one way back in 2011 and enjoyed it but sold it after a couple of years as I doubted it would pass an MOT (moped type scooter)

  • our local council have some small vans but the workers never use them its onley the gaffers so no load in them.

our local dary got one a couple of  year ago chargin it off there wind turbine and sola panels but it would not do the full round they had to go back and charg it up again for 2 hours i know it was out of action a few times, i think they have got rid as i have not seen it for a long time

Not a van,, but we just took the plunge and got the Mrs an EV.  The first big + is you basically remove the fuel cost, she was getting through at least a tank of fuel a week (£200+ a month) - now it is a couple of charges a week, total cost £10 max. Then its a service every 2 years, so cheap (apparently) that there is no service plan for them.

I agree though re the range factor with a van carrying a load, though in the cities all the courier companies have them, London a lot of taxis are EV... so I think things are getting there
