Telescopic step ladders

Looking at Telescopic step ladders specifically for hedge trimming and pruning at height .

Main reason my henchman is far too long to fit on top of my new smaller vehicle and the telescopic step ladders actually work out cheaper than fitting roof bars to transport my other scaffold set up  and will fit nicely inside my vehicle .

Up to 16.5 ft reach but are they safe and fit for purpose , any recomendatios or advice appreciated , thanks .

In theory they look like a good idea. I did see a 20 something lad up a 12ft telescopic step ladder last year. The way it was bending looked alarming. I was tempted to offer him my 12ft tripod.

There is something very reassuring about a tripod .

I know what you mean Geoffrey , I can feel a Wallace and Gromit invention moment would be in keeping like a safety parachute type back pack 😵‍💫

  • Been using a "Little Giant" 6-rung for the past decade, it's about 6ft tall when folded up, a bit heavy but strong and stable, I prefer it on most jobs to the 12ft tripod, more recently acquired, a friend was given this tripod in a load of scrap metal would you believe, something to do with it having a minor mark so written off by business owner for health and safety reasons. The telescopic ones sound good in theory but locking/unlocking every rung (if that's how they operate) could become tiresome very quickly, especially on jobs where only required for a short time

Had a Google , I like the look of the little giant , not sure but it looks like you can stand on the very top step in A frame position ? It looks sturdy and versatile .

I have a similar very old Wickes platform ladder it's served me well but the side straps which stop it collapsing are fraying with age , no way to replace them .

My henchman has a crude finish on the welds which could look like damage to some but to me it adds integrity the more weld showing the better .

I will take a look at the little giant in Wickes 👍

      • Hi John yes I often stand on the Little Giant top step in A-frame position, feel more confident to do this when it's not at full height of course, but it's certainly stable enough if you have a good sense of balance. I bought a very small platform accessory for my model which can attach to any upper step, but in practice I never use that. Have also deployed the unit as an actual ladder many times, when I didn't expect to need a conventional ladder on a job but one was unexpectedly required, the relatively heavy weight gives one a great sense of safety, especially when up in a wisteria with angry pigeons bursting out randomly

Yes the ladder conversion aspect I really like it looks like it's got stability , I would definitely get good use out it both at home and at work .
