I did the same at the weekend and thought it was a large amount that it was saying was due, but after a day or so the system updated to reflect the fact I had paid some in Jan 2020 and July 2020. So after the initial submission and calculation at the weekend a few days later what I owed was a few hundred outstanding for the 2020 year plus a payment in advance for the the current tax year. In total it was less than first thought whilst their system updated at their end so maybe hold fire a few days - what it then says you owe maybe less than. It says currently.? I was shocked initially but then relieved .....
I'll press the submit button then and hope things look less expensive in a few days time................... at the moment it looks like they're ignoring £1500 I'd paid "on account" Strangely, I've never done the July payment "on account"... no reminder appears and the Inland Revenue don't seem bothered.
I did mine before Xmas, and also paid on account in Jan 2020 (no choice), but deferred the July 2020 payment on account. When I did the tax return, it tells you that payments already made on account are not taken into account when calculating the self assessment amount due. However they should show when your tax account is updated a few days later. That is correct, however my account shows the July 2020 amount as being overdue, and they are charging interest on that amount as well. This directly contradicts what HMRC say on their website, and means that they are asking for more money than the self assessment total. Tried phoning about it, and was left on hold for >90 minutes before giving up! No alternative method of communication with HMRC.
