Struggling Acer

Hi - I wonder if anyone can advise me please - I am working on a garden which has a little Acer palmatum Purpurea that has been covered in a huge mound of russian ivy for the last year or two. The tree is very bare but the leaves it does have seem to be very healthy.I'd really like to incorporate it into my new design for the garden (not a big fan of chucking out trees unnecessarily). But I'm not sure if the leaves will come back now the Ivy has gone, how long it will take (years?) and what the best way of pruning it in the meantime is?Thank you for any help - I'm new :)

make sure its not full sun they scorch easy, give plenty of water and a general feed, give it a season to find its feet again then just shape to fit the garden
  • Dani,
Acer palmatun buds back very readily - that's why it's a great subject for bonsai enthusiasts. Colin's right - it should be fine in a year or so and putting on new growth.

  • Brilliant, thank you both very much.
  • they are beautiful trees so well worth incorporating if you can, and I agree with the others they are likely to come back strongly, - one thing to be aware of is that if it is currently weakened, it may be susceptible to brown scale, - photos on here. http://plant-passion.typepad.com/plant_passion/2010/08/whats-up-wit...
  • Thank you Claire - I'll keep an eye out for this.
