Stripping old turf and laying a new lawn

Need to quote for:-Lifting and disposing of the old turf.Leveling the ground, not that bad, few undulations.Provide new turf and lay. no borders, lay against gravel boards on 3 sides and patio edge on the 4th sideI have an idea of how long the job should take, but would be pleased to receive your estimate (time & cost) I think I will be lifting by hand or is it worth hiring a turf cutter they are about £65 around where I live. The thing i have no idea on, is what size skip or skips. I think it may all go in a large skip but would it be too heavy?Skip and new turf can be dropped right next to the lawnRectangular Size 21 x 18 feetThanks for any help

  • Hi Gordon, the turf will definitely not be too heavy for a skip, a 'builders skip' will take 8-9t that's way more turf than will fit in it!

a 21 x 18 ft lawn would probably fit in a mini skip (3.5t) I always tend to get a midi just to be sure and if I don't quite fill it I'll top up with other bits and bobs or the clients are always grateful to be told they can fill it up with some rubbish out of the garage
  • Hi Stuart

thanks for that. I remember when I was young, a long long time ago working on my own house. I filled a skip with soil, stamping it down as I filled it. When the truck arrived to pick it up, it could not be lifted. Had to take half of it out again. Oh happy days.

  • Hi Gordon

If you can get a good turf cutter then it will be faster but some of them can be a bit temperamental if not set right. Midi skip should be fine - I got 100m2 of turf in a 10t skip but I took soil out too so used two. Took half day to lift turf with two men - turf cutter packed in half way through so finished off by hand.

midi skip, turf cutter, rootzone/topsoil if you use it, days labour rate to lift and level, half day to turf - for one person, if two you'd prob blitz in a day. Roughly - difficult to be accurate without seeing the site.
    hope it helps
