hi I find in practice it's barely noticeable, the splatter is largely ejected the opposite way that's all, maybe walking along the edge the other direction than I would strim with an anti-clockwise one. For finer lawn edges I find my Ego STX4500 too powerful though, even on the lowest range setting (out of 3), perhaps the lesser spec models are better for that type of work, maybe it would be better with thinner line (2mm or less). So for edges I use my 15 year old Stihl FSA85 which is lighter and more controllable for fine work, other advantages are that it is less likely to flick stones or damage tree bark/lawn edging materials. And the trigger speed is very controllable all the way down to barely turning the spool, some cordless strimmers have a minimum running speed, below which they are basically off.
I used a petrol strimmer for a good few years, before buying an Ego ST1400. I found it brilliant- very controllable, and with 2mm line less prone to gravel flick etc. It did take a couple of weeks to get used to it rotating the other way, mainly walking edges the "other" way, but after that it felt really strange going back to using a petrol unit when using a customers trimmer. I would highly recommend the ST1400- no issues with it (or the 2.5 and 4Ahr batteries) in 4 years of lawn edging type use.
