Looking for advice on strimmer line. I have started maintaining grounds for customers and have a Kawasaki TJ27 straight shaft strimmer with an output of 0.77Kw/1.04Hp. I hear good reports about about the Stihl Square and it is available cheaply online. Some people are reporting it works well but need to apply a shot of wd 40 or silicone spray in the spool to prevent it from binding.
Any advice welcome please.

  • I have difficulty understanding the need for different shapes as I'd have thought one type would be best.... if square was better than round, they'd just do the square?  I've always used the round and I'd have thought it would "lay" a lot better on the spool than square.so you'd get more on.

    • Thank you Graham

I've never had binding issues with stihl 2.7 square. It's all much of a muchness on brands, but I do think square is better than round, seems to last longer.

I keep my strimmer line in a bucket of water so it stays flexible, whereas if it is allowed to dry out it will become more brittle and not last as long.

    • Thank you Seth, that is a good tip about the bucket of water.

  • I can't remember why I started using it, but I have been for a few years and it's never given me a reason to change.

The only time I have had a problem with it binding was when I had hastily bought a cheap spool. In the decent heads I don't think I've a problem.

    • Thank you Glen, This is 2.4mm square that you are using?

      • Just checked, yes 2.4

  • For quite some time now I have used Stihl 3mm square line. It is the best line I have ever used.

It doesn’t break or snap. I have a new Stihl strimmer head which came with some narrow line already loaded, so I thought I would use it up first. It just kept snapping and I had to keep tapping out more and more line. It was useless. So I just swapped over to the 3mm square line. It is pretty much unbreakable.

You therefore use much less line. You hardly ever have to tap out more line.

I don’t know about the 2.4 square, but if it is half as good as the 3mm square then it will be very good indeed. The 3mm square line is also usually cheaper than the 3mm round, 3mm star or 3mm heptagonal [or it was the last time I looked]. The last time I bought some I paid just under £30 for 280 metres, including delivery.
