Strimmer head

Has anyone tried a different head from the Stihl Autocut C 4-2 which comes with the FSA 85 cordless strimmer? I seem to need a new one every few months and wonder if there is a more robust head which will fit this machine.

Many thanks

Jim

  • hi Jim is it mainly the button cap that is wearing out, as you can buy those on their own, in fact i bought some knock off ones from China which look as good as the genuine type but have not used yet

Thanks for the reply Billybop, I'm not really sure what wears out on them, they just stop bump feeding easily and feel a bit unbalanced. I have seen the buttons on eBay maybe I should give it a go. It's not a big deal as new ones are cheap enough it's just lots of plastic to be chucking out. My strimmer heads usually last years but I've bought quite a few for the FSA 85 in the 3 or so years I've had it.

      • Hi jim maybe you do a lot of strimming with it, the buttons can wear away to nothing but that problem is obvious so it may be the plastic internal part of the spool part number 4006 713 3000E according to the number printed on it, here's a pic of a few and a bag of the springs which i randomly have under my desk might put a few on ebay lol5052206468?profile=RESIZE_930x

Thanks Billybop, yes, I have a load of them lying around too. Out of interest what line do you use in the 85?

          • hi Jim just the standard green 2mm Stihl round line in mine... i have a few of the FSA85's mostly second hand which just as well as one finally went up in smoke a few weeks ago and also knackered the AP200 battery that was in it... wasn't too upset though as had such good use from it

            • how about you jim what line do you prefer in this, i would like to use oregon nylium square but don't think its available in 2mm, been using 2.4mm in another cordless strimmer [honda] and it seems practically unbreakable in that one

Until a few months ago I was using a dewalt 2mm line which I got from Amazon, I felt it was a bit better than the Stihl 2mm round line. Recently I have been using Oregon biotrim for environmental reasons but......I'm still not sure I will stick with it in the long run because sometimes it seems to break too easily, sticking with it for the moment though.

  • I'm sure you realise that you can buy individual components for the C4-2 head?   For example, the usual bit that wears when you "bump" it on the ground is just £4.58 from lsengineers...... unfortunately out of stock at the moment though.  https://www.lsengineers.co.uk/cap-for-stihl-part-no-4006-710-4001.html

Thanks Graham, yes I have bought individual parts and it is not too expensive to keep them going really. I just wondered if anyone had found a better head all together. Knew chances were slim but worth a try.
