Following on from the Van Insurance discussion I was talking to a friend last night, he is a Handyman & has worked for me a few times. He set himself up just over a year ago as sole trader.
He managed to get a 63 plate High top, LWB Transit, a bit beat up but low mileage. He lives in Kent. Last week he was doing his sister a favour & working at her place in Manchester. The van was parked up for 4 days, although did move in the daytime.
It got nicked between 22.00 -23.20. Nothing on anybody's door cam's, no noise, nothing, the alarm wasn't triggered. It was found the following morning 1 1/2 miles away. They had broken into a factory & actually removed the engine, gear box & ONE headlight. Skil saw & chop saw were taken along with some smaller bits. Around £600 of tools. But they left lots of bits behind.
So stolen to order, an engine winch was taken into the broken into factory, no way they would get it out otherwise & the police think the van was towed away. The police have absolutely no leads, nothing left, no dabs or DNA.
The thing is we had recently discussed tools cover & I had said 'It's not worth it' as most policies only cover kit upto 2 years old. I feel totally gutted for him.

Amazing...... what an unusual theft. As you say, probably stolen to order. Even more surprising that they took the vehicle into a broken into factory......... a highly planned operation and makes you wonder if they do this sort of thing regularly when their local dodgy garage needs a particular engine. I have a similar view on insurance..............fitted "limpet" locks to the doors which I always use when parked anywhere................ never leave expensive tools in the van overnight.
