Stihl Viking 655 RS / Weibang 48 Pro

Good morning all,

I'm in the market for a new mower, I've got it down to Stihl Viking 655 RS and Wiebang 48 Pro BBC.

Weibang, due to all the good reviews I've read and 3 year warranty. Stihl Viking due to wet collection that I've read about.

Both around the same price to buy.

longetity of the machince and collecting fortnightly damp/wet grass is important to me.

How good is the Weibang 48 Pro at wet collction please?

How good is Stihl Viking 655 RS in general?

Could anyone please give me any advise about whitch machine woukd be best suited to me?

I currently run the new Hayer Harrier 48 Pro (2019) Does a great job in dry, not so good when it's damp, terrible in te wet.

Very much appreciated any help.

Thank you,

Craig.

  • I've got the weibang, it's very good in the wet, never had a problem no matter how wet or long the grass is....but it's a very heavy mower, I'm sure you've read the reviews and I've just joined the broken drive cable "club"! Despite I'd say it's only had around 70hours use. I'd try before you buy if possible. Would I buy again? Probably but I'd test drive others first!

  • Hi

I used a VikIng 19" and 21" for years both unsurpassed for a roller mower in collecting wet grass. However although the spares were a good price and I would carry out my own repairs it eventually became silly, always issues.

After reading about the Weibang and chatting to users on here I went for a 48 pro without BBC as it evidently collected wet grass better than the BBC version. I  bought it in May 2018 and hardly used it as the summer was dry as a bone,  went on holiday and by September I had to retire due to ill health. During that time it performed great, tackled anything like a tank although most was regular cuts. The wet grass collection isn't quite as good as the Viking but excellent compared to all other roller mowers used. With the build quality backed up with the warranty it was just a relief not to be ordering and repairing mowers every 5 minutes, I infact had 3 x working 655 Viking mowers just to ensure against breakdowns.

Ok they got some use, all day every day as that is all I did.

if any one is interested I still have the Weibang 48 Pro sitting in the Van

as I haven't been well enough untill receintly to think about selling it.

Bought May used probably 12 weeks in total £500.

    Collection Lichfield Staffs

Sorry for bumping off your post, may help someone though

    Happy mowing

    Cheers

    • Hi Gordon,

I'm in Bolton, Gtr Manchester. Litchfield is a little too far for me. Or I'd take that mower off your hands.

    • Hi Gordon. I have sent a message to your comment wall. If the Weibang is still available I am interested. I am in Sutton Coldfield so just down the road from you and can pop along any time this week.

Hi Craig, I replaced my Harrier 48 pro (new in 2013) with a Weibang 48 pro nearly 2 years ago. Like Gordon, it's a non BBC  due to research telling me it collects better. I've never had a Viking so can't compare really but it definitely collects well even in pretty wet conditions. It does a maximum of about 20 hours work per week in the season with no problems at all so far.

As you probably know already it really is a heavy beast and for that reason I would love to know how different the collection is from the BBC model. Has anyone tried both in wet conditions?

  • Thank you everyone for your replies.

    Craig.

    • Mines the BBC,  as I said bo problem in the wet..

  • The 48 pro BBC is VERY poor in the wet. I absolutely wouldn't buy it, uless you can fashion a non-factory hi lift blade. Worst collecting mower I've ever had, and I've tried most of them.

It's also heavy which you DO feel when manouvreing around things, lifting the handles up to get the roller over kerbs, stones etc.

I've not used the Viking/Stihl roller though.

  • Could anyone please advise if mowing wet grass will cause the machine to breakdown sooner?

    Gearbox, roller etc....

I hammered my last mower, Cobra Subuaru 19" the drive snapped after 18 months.

    Roller not too clever either.

I was told by my tech it's due to mowing wet grass too often.

Don't want his to happen to my new Hayter if possible.

    Thank you,

    Craig.

    • There's no doubt that water will get into the roller shaft and bearings and degrade them... but what do you do? Avoid cutting in the rain? Not in the UK, no chance.

Manufacturers have simply not created a roller mower suitable for the commercial pro in this country. It needs fan assist, a super hi lift blade, a large chute, a roller shaft that does NOT allow water in, a commercial engine and solid handle connections etc, and a gearbox that's overengineered so it's only working at 50% for it's 3-4 year life.
