Stihl mower useless in wet?

Currently using a Stihl 655 VM, which is absolutely useless in the wet, all the grass clippings just end up mulched and stuck to the bottom of the deck, nothing goes in the box, I spend most of my time, cleaning the deck before it drops mushed up grass clumps when I stop the blades, or run it over the drive when exiting the property to be left with a mess to clear up.

I don't recall my viking mowers doing this, hence the reason I bought this, my Stihl 545vr is great in the wet.

Any ideas what the problem could be? As it is I'm mowing, deck gets full of grass, cleaning it, repeat. Think it has the multi blade on, could that be the problem?

Ive previously been able to mow in all conditions, not with this thing though.

Not really a fan of cutting wet grass even with my viking , eventually the underside gets wet and succumbs to grass clumping , wheels/roller pick it up and drop off on lawn , obviously the wet comprises airflow .

When Needs must I blow the grass first to try and dry it first ..

Some mowers are worse than others they just tear and pull , wet grass sticking to the blade won't cut just like cutting with a blunt blade and damages the grass .

Maybe initially from dry the mower performs okay until it gets clogged up ,very frustrating slow process trying to cut wet grass and ending up with a green hand .

Try wait for a better day ,I find customers are very understanding although understand it knocks our schedules out .

    • I'm not a fan either, but not much choice unfortunately, like you say, end up getting behind, obviously the odd day when it's chucking it down I miss, but generally I try and keep going in light rain ( but not at the moment with this mower )

don't really have time to blow the grass either tbh, no doubt a good call though!

  • If it's a mulching type blade, I would have thought that could be the problem.

  • Having used lots of Stihl and Viking mowers over the years, I would say that it sounds very much like the blade. The only times I've struggled to collect with their mowers is when they have the mulching type blade instead of the standard hi lift one.

  • Tim and pgm- I think your right, I'm going to swap the blade over for one I have on an old  viking mower, presume it will fit, and give that a try, can't be any worse, I wouldn't mind, but it's mulching abilities aren't great either!

  • Hi I have this mower and wondered if you may have come across afault thats occured or any ideas to cure it,

on pushing cutting height adjustment down to its lowest, it overshot and got stuck on the lowest setting, pulling the bar underneath allowed it to springback up to 7,it will now only go down to cutting heights 7/6//5/and 4 but no lower.

I cant see anything obvious wondered if you or anyone else has come across this thank

    • Sorry can't help on that, not had that issue

  • Hi, I have a 655 VS fitted with Stihl's catcher kit (high lift blade) and it works pretty well in the wet, I don't use any of my other machines in the wet now.

    • Bit of an update on this, called into a stihl dealer who suggested I'm cutting to low and there's not enough vacuum, I dismissed this, bought a high lift blade, not the catcher type, and what a machine! Been mowing in the worst of conditions and it fills the box no problem, just like my old vikings did. RESULT!
