Out of interest why dig over each year? It does no good to the soil structure as over time the top few inches will just get turned to dust. Would it not be better to deep dig over once incorporating loads of organic matter, then just mulch each year and let the worms work it into the soil for you.
Glen, Thanks for reply. I've always found it best to read the question before answering. This property has grounds of 30 acres with the beds being 3 acres, if you would like to buy the organic matter and come and dig them over you would be very welcome, after 40 years in the trade I do think we know what we are doing
Easy tiger, I wasn't trying to preach, it was more of question. Now you have described the scale of the site I understand you looking for options.
It's still a valid point though, in my opinion only cultivating the top few inches isn't good for soil structure in the long run.
Cant comment on the stihl bit I use a mantis and thats been perfect round shrubs especially with the narrow tines on, and the dethatcher comes in handy too. Very good on fuel and easy to service.
