Stihl Kombi Pick Tines Tiller/Cultivator

I just got the BF-KM Pick tines attachment for my Kombi.  I love it but have one problem.  No matter how tight I tighten the thumb screw the cultivator slowly pulls the shaft out of the machine.  I have put knurling on the shaft to improve grip but has anyone else experienced this & how did you cure it ?   Thanks

  • I've never used a Kombisystem however I've encountered this sort of thing when mounting attachments to a Stihl strimmer.  Assuming its the same sort of thing with the clamp compressing the outer tube which has a "slit" in it which enables it to clamp the attachment tube.  Over time, the outer tube "stretches so that the "slit" is completely closed so it can't tighten any fiurther and the attachment tube is still loose.  Whats needed is to widen the slit.   If you've a Dremel, these work really well with a cicular cutting disc...... an angle grinder or a thin file if you can get it in there........... even a hacksaw blade.

    • Yes the aluminium is very soft.  I will look next time to see if the gap is closed.

Those connector wear on the inside, I normally buy a new one, didn't think to cut the slit. Quick fix I use is electrical on the kombi tool shaft.

Another thing, the black thumbs screws thread and nut wears out, so that could also be a cause.

    • It's only noticable with the pick tine because it pulls at the shaft.

I've noticed it before with the strimmer and the hedge cutter when cutting the top of thick a hedge. I don't use the pick tines on a kombi engine any more only on the mm56 multi engine, a bit easier to handle.

        • I have a Mantis but I find the BF-KM easy to handle if you let it do the work.  I was suprised at how heavy it is but that helps when you hit stones, roots etc.

My clients love the fluffed up look :)

All of the boarders I currently look after are well established with a mixed of herbaceous, bulbs and shrubs, so i find the machine impractical chewing up everything so I just dig over with a fork. I have found Pick tines good on open boarder.

Stihl make a power hoe attachment, but for some reason they don't sell it in this country.

  • An update. Turned out to be no more than corrosion on the thread. Wire brush, wd40 & it's gripping fine.  Superb tool.
