We have exactly the same issue with one of these Kombi attachments, it's sitting on our bench for 'spares'. Our friendly Stihl Tech who deals with most of our repairs said they were un-econmical to fix due to parts cost (and he is not trying to sell us a replacement :-).
If you choose to repair, would be interested to hear how much it costs.
The pinions are about £80 on Amazon. But you have to change the bearings. I suspect that the bearings fail & the excess play strips the pinions.
Also I believe that the drive pinion is a nightmare to remove -you have to heat it.

Well the above has made my mind up not to bother to try and get my Kombi which has the same fault repaired. One tool for one job in the future for me.
Problem is they share the same gear box, so a HL will fail just the same (ie, it's nothing to do with the Kombi element).
