Spent the whole day hedge cutting today (Privet) after a couple of hours my HSA 130T started to make a vibrating rattling noise, couldnt make out whether it was coming from the gearbox or the motor. swapped it over and started to use the HSA 130R and 10 mins later that started to do the same!

Had to get the job finished, so carried on with the HSA 130R it seemed to stop making the noise for a few minutes and then start again for a few minutes then stop again.  checked the grease in gearbox and thats fine.

Both machines about 10 months old so still under warranty. I presume i can take them into my local dealers as i bought them online.

Should i get in touch with Stihl first?

Could it be the motors that are on the way out?

Anyone else had this happen?

  • Hi very odd that both machines developed the same symptoms at the same time. I have HSA130R long blade version which is a beast that will tackle just about anything, only had it a few months though. I also have the very similar previous models HSA94T and HSA94R, with the standard length blade. Apparently the motor in the 130's is an uprated improved type to these. Just wonder if there was any fencing wire hidden in that hedge as if you nip a bit the minor blade damage caused is noticeable for a short while as the burr works itself off

    • Hi Billy

yes i thought it was wierd too!

definatley no wire and the blades are moving fine, well oiled with gt85, ill see if i can get a video uploaded

  • What do you use to lubricate the blades i use Sthil chain oil as this has a sticky consistency so lasts longer on the blades.

If it happened on both trimmers on the same type of hedge maybe the sap and the juice from the leaves on that particular day stuck to you blades and causing friction.

Give the blades a good clean and see what happens.
