  • Battery has a malfunction according to manual Try another battery if you have a spare.

    • Tried another charged battery,no change, thinking it might be contacts on battery or in unit.?

  • the dirty sensor switch would not cause any lights i believe. it just wouldn't run at all. I think 3 red lights flashing indicates a fault with the tool or it is too hot. Does the gearbox get greased at all

    • just checked and 3 solid lights is the overheat warning. 3 flashing lights indicates a tool malfunction

      • Not overheating, left it for half a day, tried again, looks like a trip to the dealer, thanks for the reply.

    • Correct, the switch is in the head and if that were the cause you'd be getting no warning lights on the battery and the hedge cutter would just seem dead. Three red flashing would suggest problem with the unit, three glowing and it's too hot or cold. From past experience as mentioned above swap batteries and or leave it 10mins and see if it's still an issue before contacting dealer

As all above say, not the switch but just for anyone's benefit, this is it.  The switch gets bits of conifer etc under the metal trigger and stops it pressing the tiny button underneath.  The machine then thinks that the head is still folded so wont run.9732335871?profile=RESIZE_930x

  • carl lawson Did you find out what the problem was and the solution? Just had a friend message me with exactly the same symptoms. Thanks

    • Hi,took the machine to a stihl dealer, rang me and said it needed a new motor,£160 all in to repair, told him to go ahead,he told me there were no motors available in the country,no choice at this time of year but to buy a new unit Hla86,.,which supercedes the hla85.If I'd have known about the microswitch problem I probably would have checked that first.

      • that broken one still has value or is possible to repair oneself economically with second hand parts from a hla85 or hla65, but totally get that you need a working one now
