Stihl FS250 brushcutter

I think the FS250 model is now discontinued, but I had a shot with one over the weekend, having been looking in the FS100/130 region.  It whizzed through stuff with which I struggled  with an old FS86 and reminded me of the power I used to get from a Stihl backpack which i loved for many years.

A new one on clearance from a local dealer is on offer at £520. Is it worth the £100 odd extra?

  • Reading this made me look at how much it would be to replace my FS450, i couldn't believe how much they cost these days. Lightly used  Echo SRM4000's come up on ebay for a fraction of the price and other makes like Dolmar and Komatsu Zenoah too. It also has the added bonus of if they get stolen then its not the end of the world either like it would be with a spanking new stihl.

Anyhow. Answering the question,  a small strimmer is way better for light duty maintenance work and a big one is better for the rough stuff so it depends on what you want to do with it ?

  • This is for heavy duty work...forwards strimming I would now call it, since I have discovered elsewhere on this site that i am not alone in doing linear features by strimming backwards, with a loop handled light strimmer. I have done a couple of churchyards for 15+ years, which I reckon I could nearly do blindfolded now. I won't, so no need for anyone to offer H&S advice.

I haven't used a bike handled strimmer for many years until now, 'cos of the palaver of bringing it in and out of action, and because my Etesia RKEB could tackle the large areas, finishing off with my light strimmer. This connects with: http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/rough-grass-mowin...  Hoping people might tell me that FS250 is a good machine, or that it is crap! I want to stick with Stihl
