Stihl Battery & HEAT

Hi all, I hope we are all busy & enjoying the hot weather. Unfortunately it seems to be too hot for my AP300's. They are refusing to charge atm, i guess due to over heating. I have 3 batteries & now two are completely dead, leaving just one to trim some hedges today. I use a Stihl RMA448 along side my Weibang, but as it eats the battery juice I have had to switch back to the Weibang & limit my use of the Stihl kit.

Has anybody else had issues with their kit the last couple of days? I even resorted to chilling the batteries in the fridge for a couple of hours but with no luck. Maybe the charger is the thing that doesn't like the heat, as soon as I switch it on the light goes red, then green before starting to charge. All for about 10 seconds & cuts off.

It's a real pain in the A if you can't use the kit because the temps too high. I don't normally work once it gets to 30c due to heat stroke a few years ago, but I've just had a week off & need to catchup. Maybe it's Stihl's way of stopping me working at high temps!!!

Stay safe & cool all.

  • hi yes been avoiding working in the heat myself, Friday in particular seemed an opportunity for a rare day off, have had issues when a tool overheated, but not the actual stihl battery itself, my usual bug bear is that the packs can be sensitive to cold, refusing to charge when nowhere near freezing, whereas the bosch/ ego at same temperature are fine, maybe it was the charger itself that was too hot

  • could your charger be faulty? if the problem still occurs with the batteries chilled in the fridge, I can't see how it can be caused by the hot weather.

    • Hi Graham, I shall see tomorrow when it turns cooler if it is the charger but I know the batteries won't charge once they are hot, normally from use & charging straight away. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.

The batteries won't charge when it's too cold either - you just need patience!

    • Thx Nick, at least when they are cold you can warm them up with the heat in the van. 3 days of heat & unable to use the tools is trying my patience a bit far.

      • Just wondered what red lights if any were shown on the batteries when this happened, and did they flash. I tend not to charge hot batteries straight after use, but I do have a lot of batteries

        • Hi Billy, no red lights on either of the batteries I have tried charging. It's the charger, when I switch it on, flicks from green to red, back to green. Starts to charge for 5 seconds or so, then off. Looking at Stihl's site it says malfuction on the charger, which is a pain.

I checked & have had it 5 years, in two weeks time, so new Al500 charger ordered & also whilst at it aother battery AP500s which is bloody expensive but they say you should get 10 years from it, (5 charges a week) this will be ideal for the RMA448.

          • I had a fan assisted Bosch Li-Ion battery charger over heat and die from having a few large capacity packs run through it in rapid succession on a hot day. It was replaced under warranty as it wasn't that old at the time. Worth unscrewing the casing of yours maybe to see if its just an interior fuse has popped. the new AP500 battery sounds good

my Stihl al  300 charger stopped working because I lost it !
so I bought a NEW stihl Al301-4 it charges 4 batteries one after another

a customer two weeks later during a visit said I found your charger but kept locked in my garage so I knew where it was ! Relieved ? No cos I went in there shed where I'd left it and it wasn't there and couldn't find it So after running all 6 batteries empty I bought the new one for £250

it's great as u grab a battery or two and leave it on to charge or leave charging overnight, it's very quiet. Just wish it had a 12v outlet or charged the small hand held topiary shear battery. Still waiting for a Stihl DAB on site radio
